Motivational Interviewing - embracing change

Do you work with people who resist change? Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an approach that can assist individuals who are 'stuck' in their thinking. This training in MI can help people to recognise when they are finding change difficult and assist them to view their own behaviour objectively. MI can help them to understand the means by which they can change their behaviour and achieve their goals.  In other words, it can bring about behavioural change and help people to explore and resolve doubt. This approach is especially helpful with individuals who are less motivated. Developed by Miller and Rollnick, Motivational Interviewing is a person-centred approach. Research has shown Motivational Interviewing to be helpful with a wide range of issues. This two day course will equip participants with a sound understanding of Motivational Interviewing theory and skills. The programme can be delivered live over Zoom.

"I found the full training very good, totally adapted to my work requirements. I would normally find remote learning very impersonal and the thoughts of the full day online training did not appeal to me. However, Gary had planned variety and breaks throughout which really helped. He ensured there was a very relaxed atmosphere and therefore good interaction by all. Course content was tailored to the needs of the participants. Gary’s own practical experiences added to the learning."

Esther Mooney, Health Promotion Officer, HSE Sligo, February 2022

“Everything worked very well. Really enjoyed the aspect that the participants were listened to and guided the direction of the two days.  Robert’s facilitation was excellent, the training was engaging, informative, very practical, open and honest. It was an inviting environment where I felt comfortable to contribute.”

Joe Murphy, Academic Success Coach, Munster Technological University, February 2022

"Gary was a brilliant facilitator, so welcoming and engaging. Really kind to all participants and got us all involved.  The breaks were well-spaced. Content was interesting and applicable to my work. Doing the course from home was convenient."

Muireann Murphy, Dublin Simon, December 2021

"The mixture of slides, videos and breakout rooms kept the course interesting and engaging. Robert was extremely engaging, patient and happy to answer any questions we had. The way Robert mixed up the different ways of teaching the course kept it interesting and engaging."

Katie Walsh, Resettlement Co-ordinator, Wheatfield Prison, January 2021

Programme duration

Two days or four half days

What the training will cover

The workshop will provide the theory of Motivational Interviewing (MI) and the space to practice the skills associated with this approach.

How these skills and approaches could help at work

The general principles of Motivational Interviewing could be applied across a wide variety of workplace environments from HR/Personnel management to business development and customer service teams.  The principles include the expression of empathy, the development of discrepancy i.e. how to help a person view their current behaviour objectively and see how it differs from the ideal or desired behaviour, how to roll with resistance, supporting a person's self belief,  and avoiding arguments.

What is involved

This programme will give participants the space and time to become familiar with MI using the following key skills:

∙ Listening
∙ Use of Open-ended questions ∙ Affirming
∙ Reflective Listening
∙ Summarising
∙ Eliciting change talk

Participants will have the opportunity to observe and practice Motivational Interviewing through role-plays and scenarios provided by the trainer.  Attendees will receive handouts and relevant literature to enable them to develop their understanding of Motivational interviewing.

Tailoring the training content

As all of our training is bespoke, we will consult you prior to delivery. A review of current practice within your organisation is offered and we aim to build a programme which meets any identified needs.

The Learning Curve Institute also offers a bespoke post-course support system whereby participants are provided with the contact details of the trainer and can contact them with questions they may have at any point subsequent to the training day.
