Working with Resentment

Delivered by Dr. Kevin Fehin, this workshop will explore unresolved resentment and how it can soon grow into a character trait often expressed as bitterness, anger, defiance and resistance to change. Resentment often feels empowering to the individual despite at the same time creating a swamp life effect that then leaves the person stuck in this most challenging and chronic of emotions. This in turn can create obstacles for therapists working with resentment, as resentment by its very nature resists change. Interventions focused on forgiveness and acceptance soon flounder in the face of resentment. This workshop will focus on firstly exploring the specific kinds of experiences that give rise to resentment, defining precisely what resentment is and is not and then focus on designing a therapeutic relationship best able to validate, contain and work with resentment. Interventions will explore how to introduce persuasively the benefits of forgiveness and acceptance as routes out of resentment. Psychodynamic principles will also be explored to assist in processing the experiences that initially gave rise to resentment.

Members of The Psychological Society of Ireland can receive learning credits on completion of this workshop and other accreditation is pending.

“I liked Kevin’s teaching style. The presentation was not too text heavy but had an accessible balance of theory, group discussion and real-life scenarios. Speaking from personal experience and from the wider staff team discussion, the training days in which we have engaged with Kevin have been extremely enjoyable and have given staff plenty food for thought and strategies to better enhance their practise.”

"Kevin is an excellent communicator, making pretty difficult psychological material easily accessible. He also peppers his presentations with salient examples and tremendous good humour. He actively draws in the participants to ensure everyone gets what they need from the workshop. He doesn’t shy away from the tricky and the complicated… in fact, I think he shows his very best discernment at those times. Notes and references are of a superb standard and back up the learning. “

"I think the training is aimed mostly at therapists and counsellors but as someone who works in a different capacity with people the content is both relevant and informative. It's difficult to get this type of training for development of those who manage/supervise employees who are derived from a particular group of society. (Unemployed & long term unemployed). I have done a few of these workshops and find that the integration of the content and learning gives a depth to my work that benefits our employees and their progression and also benefits the work environment as performance is enhanced."
